In the World many groups and organizations are debating whether or not animal testing should be banned. Some people believe that there are reasons why animal testing should be done. Others believe that animal testing is morally wrong. Some experts also feel that there are other options available. The research proves that because there are other options available, animal testing should be banned.
Animal Testing
There has been much controversy about using animals in experiments for decades. People converse over different alternatives for animal testing and the inhumane way scientists treat these animals in experiments. This topic causes so much controversy because there are ethical issues to consider such as the treatment of the animals and the reasoning behind testing on these animals if it’s for a greater cause or not. As of now, I am for animal testing for many beneficial reasons that come out of animal testing. Although in some cases animals maybe abused, there have been so many discoveries with medicine with testing these drugs on animals.
Until we find a better way of testing drugs I believe animal testing is ethical. The research that has been gathered from animals has surpassed anything scientists could hope for. So why would such a highly debatable topic arise from such great accomplishments? Scientists use animals to test a theory and then alter their theories based upon the valuable information gathered from each experiment. Animal rights activists believe that animals are used for pointless tests and suffer tremendously (Beckoff, M. & Meaney, C. A, 1998). They tend to look aside from the facts that animals have given millions around the world a new outlook on life, and would rather see only the negative side effects of animal testing which far outweighs the positive things animal testing has contributed to the medical world. They don’t realize that the animals they believe are being harmed, have not only impacted their lives in some way, but have impacted their families, friends, and children by providing people with vaccines and antibiotics which are deserving of more accreditation than what they label them.
Millions of lives are saved every year because of one animal’s, results to either a drug or new form of surgery, and I believe instead of believing that an animal’s life was a waste; I view it instead as the next step in bettering people’s lives for hundreds of years to come. Animal testing is the most predominant forms of testing used by scientists; the results they yield bring a new outlook on life for millions around the world.
Animal testing should be outlawed because it is hurtful and not necessary. Do animals feel the same pain that we as humans feel? How do we know that other humans feel pain? We know that we ourselves can feel pain. We know this from direct experience of having your finger slammed in a drawer, or stubbing your toe on a chair.
It is said that pain is a mental event; something that can not be observed. Pain is something that is felt, and we can only assume that other humans feel pain from external indications such as our own like crying, screaming, or jerking away from something. If we can justify that other humans feel pain, why is it said that animals do not feel pain? When an animal is poked, burned, or stepped on; they will cry, yelp, or jerk away. Since the external indicators are the same, we can assume that animals feel the same pain that we as humans feel. Animal protection advocates stress that the main disadvantage of animal testing is the inhumane treatment of animals in tests due to the fact that anesthesia for the help of pain is often not used. Scientists say that using anesthesia will interfere with test results.
Tests that are performed on animals range from them being forced to ingest different household cleaning products and then monitored to see the results and new cosmetics placed on their skin to find out if there are any side effects that would be harmful to a human. There are even some practices where animals are forced to ingest a medicine before it is put on the market to make sure that there are no life- threatening illnesses that will be caused to a human from taking the product. In order to test corrosive chemicals like Savage Acid and Goodbye Graffiti, rabbits backs are shaved and corrosive chemicals are applied onto their raw skin and left for up to two weeks. The chemicals burn the skin and the rabbits are given no pain relief. After the testing period the rabbits used are then killed.
Today the term “vivisection” is used. Vivisection is defined as “cutting while still alive” but it is more commonly used today as any harmful experiment or test that is performed on an animal. Animal experimentation involves the incarceration of animals and poisoning, mutilation, disease and killing of those individuals. It is arguably the most brutal and most severe form of violence in the modern world.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires by law that pesticides be tested on dogs, which are shoved into "inhalation chambers" where they try in vain to escape the deadly poisons that are pumped in. The Food and Drug Administration requires companies marketing fluoride products to swab the teeth of 200 rats with the test substance for two weeks, at which time the animals are killed and their heads baked in an oven for an hour and your tax dollars are funding these types of experiments. Some businesses that test on animals include: Clorox, Clairol, Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Cover Girl, Dial Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, and Playtex Products Incorporated.
It is said that an estimated 50,000 animals die due to the testing on them that Proctor and Gamble performs on them every year. “Secretly-filmed video evidence of P&G sponsored experiments at Huntingdon Life Sciences (a major multi-national contract animal testing company) shows the brutal treatment and killing of 48 monkeys.” (Murray-West, R, 2005) One other business that performed testing on animals was IAMS. I know, you wouldn’t think that a company that made food for your pet to keep them healthy would test on animals much like your pets. Some of the tests that IAMS performed were:
- 28 female cats had their abdomens cut open and solution injected repeatedly into their bowels.
- 24 young dogs were given kidney failure by the removal of one kidney and the damaging of the other. All the dogs were killed after being fed an experimental diet and their kidneys analyzed.
- 18 young Great Danes were fed on differing diets and at eighteen months of age. Their bones from their front and back right legs were cut out and then stressed until they broke. Pigs were also used in similar experiments.
Since cosmetics and household items are not required to be tested on animals and since there are non-animal alternatives, it is difficult to understand why companies continue to conduct these cruel tests on animals. The two main reasons that all companies do not become cruelty free are: the fear for human safety and the fear of product liability suits.
Founded in 1981 was Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), a place that is dedicated to helping find new methods to replace the laboratory animals that is being tested on. The CAAT vision states: “To be a leading force in the development and use of reduction, refinement, and replacement alternatives in research, testing, and education to protect and enhance the health of the public.” (CAAT)
The main disadvantages to animal tests, according to John Frazier and Alan Goldberg, of CAAT, are: "Animal discomfort and death, species-extrapolation problems, and excessive time and expense." (CAAT) Revlon Cosmetics was one of the first large companies to fund the research for alternative testing with a contribution of $750,000 to the Rockefeller University in 1979. Keep in mind that, while companies search for alternatives, animal use actually INCREASES because the old test (using animals) must be done alongside the new test (without animals) to ensure consistent results.
So what types of alternatives are being used today? The most common alternatives that are used today are: in-vitro tests, computer software, and even human “clinical tests”. The use of animal cells, organs, and tissue cultures are also deemed as alternatives, however animal lives are still sacrificed for the use of their parts.
How can someone that kills a dog in the middle of a street in broad daylight have repercussions to abide by but the companies that slowly kill animals with the tests that they perform on them not have any repercussions to pay? There are laws in place for the safety of animals that are on our streets or that live with us as companions, but there are no laws that say it is wrong for businesses to slice a dog open while it is still alive with no anesthesia just to take tests of its kidney.
The animals can not tell the scientist that they don’t want to be tested on, but humans can. We need to talk for the animals and help stop this cruel and inhumane treatment. There are many other ways that products and medicine can be tested; the use of innocent animals is no longer needed.
So, the next time you pick up a product at the store; look at the fine print before you take it to the register to pay. Make sure that the products you use don’t support the inhumane killing of an innocent animal. The animal that is being killed for a shampoo that you are buying could be someone’s companion.

i don'r really agree with jas. there are regulations when it comes to animal testing. people aren't trying to be cruel. besides, only about 4% of animal testing is for medication. the greater part of testing is for cosmetics. and as far as medication, it has really made a leap in our knowledge of medicines and the way everyone's bodies work. and it's not like people just torture the animals. they do try and make them feel better as much as it's possible in the testing environment. they don't like it as much as we do when they get hurt.
why are they not arrested? Its animal abuse and everyone else gose to jail for it. Its horrible!
Thanks for showing us what we don't want to see. I too can barely stand it when I hear about animal testing. I also wrote recently about trying to rescue chimps that have lived for years in research labs. It is a horrible business!

I'm a high school student doing a research report on this topic, I completely understand were all of you are coming from on this matter. I to care for animals and would do anything to save them from a life full of torture, abuse, and death...but I have a question for all of you...have you ever had anyone very close to you die from some kind of ftal illness? such as cancer? Well I have, and i've looked into animal research alot, and found that not all animals are dieing for no reason. I think people don't understand that scientists are trying to find a cure for these awful diseases, and yes unfortunately they use animals, but without those animals we probablly wouldnt have things like chemo therapy and all these other forms of treatments. i think we should stop COSMETIC animal testing but continue the scientific research of medicime for terminal illnesses. How would you feel if you had a son or daughter that was diagnosed with some form of cancer? of course the only thing that would be on your mind is ''how can they get better?'' now think if we had a cure, animals are helping to contribute to that,.

I have been against animal testing for a long time. Testing on animals especially for cosmetics makes no sense. If the products can be harmful, why would we use them? Find human test pilots if the products are intended for human use!
this is rediculous. animal testing is just wrong. even though study shows that b/c of the testing millions of lives were saved but it all comes down to the life that was tooken. the animal life was taken away from it b/c of cruel punishment for no wrong doing. i think scientist should find another way to do testing or find other animals other than monkeys and chimps that are similar to humans. like rats. the rat population is higher than the monkeys so stop killing them. the monkeys that is. kill the rats.

im here again to make a point to all who is listening. i do understand the fact that animal testing is just plain wrong and i myself wants to help fight against it but i read a comment left by a blogger on this site and it got me thinking. she stated "have you ever lost someone close to you from a fatal disease?" and to answer that the answer would be yes. i lost my aunt to lung cancer 1 year ago and it was horrible for me to deal with. i do, truely understand that animal testing is wrong but maybe thinking about things like that and the fact that testing these animals to find a cure that could have saved that loved one makes you look at thing differently. but that doesnt mean that animal testing is the answer to everything. there are other ways we just have to discover them.

I see your concerns towards animal testing, but I still disagree. I see that there have been quite a few failures with animal testing procedures. You see, all have been complaining of the failures or the harm of common household materials on the animals. That is all everyone seems to see, the dark. The simple way to fix this all is to completely stop the animal testing of cosmetics and household items, and only do medical testing until a viable suppliment is provided. This way the toll of animals greatly decrease, and the medical testing can continue to a less affecting degree until a feesable replacement is found where it would no longer harm animals. Now that the seed has been set, stop complaining of the deed and start thinking of a replacement instead.
Animal testing is animal abuse, to be locked up in a cage where they cant get out and poked at cut and mistreated is not right wake up its 2010 go test humans before animals we are the one who will use the drugs not them they should not suffer anymore for humans, we take their homes to build ours, and trash what we leave for them, ie oil spills cutting down the rainforest, forest fires etc.. its just wrong, people that test on animals should be locked up in jail for the rest of their lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an idea, why don't we do the testing on the immature, snot nose kids posting irrelevant information here, instead of the animals. I am sure the animals have and will live more useful lives than they ever will. Just a thought.

I agree to the hub's topic. However, in certain situations, it becomes really necessary to use animals as test vehicles. Mind you, I am not vouching for the process. However, until better or an alternative vehicle comes along, animals will be used, legally or illegally, for drug testing. And that's a fact. Great hub by the way.

Other day a person told me that we can use animal clones for experimentation that would be better than using animals. I sort of disagreed with that because i think clones do have complete set of senses and its just like breeding lots of animal for testing.

Navnoor i never approved anything in favor of human testing.. However i did mention a fact that there are more humans than animals. So why not use humans for drug testing? But here is the biggest problem... Do you know that human testing can be cheaper than animal testing? There are many poor people today who volunteer for drug testing and in return they get paid nominal amounts. If we compare animal testing on monkey to testing on human,we can clearly see that monkey is more expensive than what humans are paid. So its very easy to exploit poor and needy people in the name of testing and research.

That would be illegal, why they do it is because it is cheap. People who consent are treated very well and if it reacts with them they are treated. The animals are killed. you are naive.

History has shown us that even if drug companies test their new "drug of the month" on animals, there are no guarantees that it is safe. We have all seen many times drug recalls and lawsuits because these money making drugs cause an unforeseen disease. Did you know that you cannot hold drug companies accountable if you fall ill or die from vaccinations, so covering their asses is no excuse because no matter the consequence they will get away with it. Lets face it people, drug companies are not there to save you, or cure anything, they are there to make money and that is all. There is no miracle pill that cures everything.
Although it is true that animal testing has afforded us the opportunities to make huge medical advancements, where do you draw the line? When is abuse too much abuse? Was the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis okay? Some may say that it is not the same to compare humans and animals in terms of feelings. But to me we are all the same in that respect, if the conditions described in the above article were done to my husband, I would die inside. But I would die just as much if it happened to my dog. So are the animals we don't know any different than the ones in our living rooms? Would you be able to watch while your dog was being fed chlorine bleach? Would you watch while your dog was in horrible pain and slowly dying with no relief? Even if the testing was not so horrible, would you be able to watch as the mental state of your dog deteriorated from being in a metal cage for years and never being afforded the luxury of a loving caress? Animals do feel depression, it has been shown in pigs.
When I think of animal testing, sometimes it seems like no big deal because it doesn't affect me at the moment. But, if my mother was ill, would I be able to do what is described above to an animal, would I be able to torture? Would the illness of my mother justify my own cruelty? To me, the answer is no.
When if comes down to it, animal testing is a question of selfishness. That I matter more than others. It is absolutely not a question of species survival, but of individual "survival". Some would ask, but what is wrong with that, isn't that the way of nature? Sure, some cruelty is expected in nature, but not to the level that we have risen. I also think that we have consciously chosen to separate ourselves from nature, so maybe it is time to choose what is ethically right, to what is "natural".
There is a question that we will never know the answer to and that is: Where would medicine be without animal testing? Maybe it wouldn't be as far behind as everyone believes. Ancient civilizations achieved amazing feats without what we believe would be impossible without today's technology.
Next time you think that animal testing/torture is acceptable, look at your dog or cat.

I love the fact that some humans feel they are above or outside of mother nature, meaning that animals are nature, and humans are not, talk about endangered species also makes me shake my head. Who are we as humans to feel that we are beyond mother nature/god to determine what species stays or goes. A prime example how folks typically think minning is bad when it can create side effects, like in this case a acid lake, Berkeley Pit Lake in Butte Montanna. Nothing lives in the water, except organisims that live nowhere else on this planet, these organisims are now a possibility to fight cancer. Now this acid water is not animals, but a point to be remembered as where there is death, there is life. Typically these labs are not trying to torture the animals, and yes as humans we have many emotions and feelings for other life.
Ask yourself this, you are on a table dying, the doctor tells you, we can save you but we would have to kill this monkey in order to do so, the monkey will feel no pain, we will put him to sleep, it is up to you if you wish to live.
What would your choice be, or think of your loved one. Now for those that use torture or harmful things to the animals for non health/life changing type testing, yes that should not be allowed.
Something else to ponder, do you think the lion takes care to try to do the least painful method when killing its prey? Again yes that is for food, but that point aside and not tyring to seem not caring, as I do care about all life forms, but to be able to move forward. Sometimes you have to sacrafice, and life after all is not fair. Something most folks have a hard time getting a grip on, that life is never fair and nor should we choose actions to try to balance the table.
Rest assured if the table was turned the lion would eat us and would not care about what sort of pain we were in as it mauls us. Life is a cycle, sometimes extremely beautiful, yet sometimes gruesome. After all we humans are part of mother nature also, weather we choose to believe it or not, man made is not a disaster, nor are 80% of our actions. The good we try to do far outweighs the minority of the bad, all animal testing is not the bad evil folks proclaim it to be, some yes, all no.
Next time you think about animal testing look at your dog or cat, but then also think about someone very close to you dying, and they could save them but it would mean losing your dog or cat, which will you choose..
dont put that hypothetical pull on your emotion B.S on the table, because as hard as it would be I know I would choose to lose my loved family pet over losing my loved one.. would it suck, you bet it would, sometimes life sucks, get over it, great people make hard choices, those who cant or dont choose the easy road.

I,m an animal expert and I know the reason scientists do experimentations on animals, but sometimes they kill many animals in a project that doesn't work in particular animal, so they die invane. I think this should stop or scientists should study first what kind of animal is compatible with a type of medication, not just doing it without seen the ttrade-offs.

I agree that it is wrong to kill animals for testing or indeed harm them. We are said in Christianity to be placed on this earth as the steward, to look after what God created and by using animals for own vanity in cosmetic testing and medical testing we are in turn going against the position that God bestowed on us. I understand that if we didn't test on animals we would need to test on humans which is considered to be more wrong as we have a 'soul' and feelings that we can communicate to everyone. Then again must we use animals as they get considered as the weaker, less emotional forms with no soul....?
The main thing that we must understand is that no matter what, there is little we can do, as we need vaccines and we need cures to be produced to save lives from fatal illnesses like cancer. If we didn't use animals what would we use?

Animal experiments are closely monitored so that the least suffering possible is experienced by the animal. Animal experiments are also expensive: they would not be done if there was not a clear benefit.
The benefit is that you, me, our loved ones and friends have medicines that treat or cure and don't make patients worse within unforeseen side effects.
I love animals too, but I will not kid myself into thinking that we would have all the Parkinson's, CF, Heart Disease, cancer, vaccines, Alzheimer's, HIV drugs that we have now (to name but a fraction) without animal experiments. Those are the facts. Don't like animal experiments? Then don't go the doctor for treatment: refuse drug therapy for you and your children. Those who think that the scientific community know enough about our bodies, guess again: remember Viagra? That was designed as a heart disease treatment, yet unknown side effects meant they found it was far more effective for "you-know-what".
Without animal experiments that would happen all the time, only the side effects could be the likes of liver failure, birth defects, brain damage, massive immune response etc.... rather than unexpected tumescence.

I would just like to point out that humans raise animals for slaughter, even altering animals' genetic codes, all to have a better meal on their tables. I am vegetarian. I would like to ask all of you who have thusfar cried out against animal testing if you have stopped eating meat. I bet the majority of you have not.
I understand that animals are a necessary source of food, rich in protein. And I get the fact that if humans did not consume animals, their population would increase too much to be supported by the carrying capacity. However, I think a bigger issue is how we treat animals on farms, or even in our homes. Lab animals are actually treated quite well; vivisection is greatly reduced, experimental ablation rates are decreasing as we now have technology (ex. transcranial magnetic stimulation, PET, MRI) to view brain activity.
Animal research has had enormous benefits to medicine for human AND non-human animals. I know it seems cruel that we mainly do this research to benefit ourselves (animal rights defenders call this "speciation") but let's face it-- the animal kingdom collectively requires it.
Animal slaughter to satisfy our carnal hunger is wrong. Animal research for medicine (which is governed by very stringent sets of rules) is just necessary, in my opinion.:S

To test on animals such as chimpanzees and other animals that have the ability to recognize fear and are intelligent enough to teach their young is totally unethical. Just because we are "smarter" than animals does not mean that testing on them is okay because they have "inferior" brain capacities. If you argue that point then you can justify using people who have mental disabilities. Would we ever do that? OF COURSE NOT. So to say it is justified or there is no other way is just a cowardice way of saying we don't feel like trying to search for another solution.

Yes animal testing has lead in the medical field. BUT it's still not right to test cosmetics or anything on that on them, thats going to make them sick and or make them hurt. It's not right. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best thing in the world, but not the worst thing in the world. But then again, animals die because of the tstings they go through. I dont like it one bit. It still isnt right to do.

What if people tested products on us which could make us sick, cause us a lot of pain, and even make us die, just to see if PET products are safe for the pets? we wouldnt like that* sure eeryone says "Oh yea, but one animal can safe thousands", but that one had a reason for living* one dog, cat, or bunny had a life, but was taken away for us* We already some animals for food, now we r killing them for no reason* And i think its really wrong* I acctually have a dog, and i would burst out into tears to find out if people were doing testing on him,t hat could make him so sick, or die* I know medicine is important, and I know that without it, we wouldnt have cues for anything* But there shoud be another way to test it, other than hurting a living creature*

i think that if humans want a cure so much they should test on the humans. animals never gave their consent to be used and the idiots that think that animals should be happy they died for a cuase should really shut up. if humans want a cure sooo badly they should be willing to give their lives so that someone after them can live from what is found from that research. this may all seem harsh but thats my opinion.

Look at the bigger picture. If you are not a vegetarian then technically you are for animal testing. The meat that you eat is from an animal that has been killed and the products on your shelf are from animals that have been tortured and some killed. It is cruel but you can't really say that you are against animal testing if you eat meat.

I think some testing for medical reasons is nessessary . I had cancer and I don't know if I'd still be alive without doctors doing their job. Doctors are not having fun doing this ,people like you shoudn't make it harder for them .

It is fair to say, if animals were never used for any sort of research, science and particularly medicine would not have advanced to where it is.
Researchers don't take the lives of animals for fun. In fact, they do the "dirty" work for us so that we can live our "more ethical" lives.
Of course, it is easy to neglect their contributions to our society and point at what they put the animals through. But in retrospect, if you or your family or friend is suffering from a disease, wouldn't you rather know that there is a cure? Without animal testing, I'm afraid there would never have been one.
if you really oppose animal testing then stop taking all of the medications that you take, because all of those went through similar testing with animals. its a naive thought to believe that'd we'd be just as we are now without animal testing, which is what you are foolishly looking over in your "argument." once better technology comes about then maybe, but for now these tests are saving humans' lives so do yourself a favor and be thankful for what you do have

Also I know that they do them in animals but they don´t do them in humans because they don´t know which reflection she or he is going to have so that is why they do them in animals.
If the scientists can't use animals for testing, what can they use? They cannot obviously test the medicine on humans. In order for better medicines and treatments to be developed, there must be a testing done to make sure that the medicine is not harmful or will not kill human. It is true that animals are pitiful, but it is just wrong to say that scientists are wrong.
