Tablet PC Speaker: A Boost for Tablet PC
By Sara Algoe
Tablet computers are great for all kinds of carry-with-you entertainment. Right from your own hand you can read a variety of books, newspapers, and magazines; watch a movie; and play a game or two. If you need to change location, you don’t have to stop what you’re doing—you just take it with you. The only problem is that there’s really no way to get good sound quality for your music and videos from the internal speakers on the tablet. Or there wasn’t, until Logitech created a speaker that works for the iPad as well as other tablets with an audio output of 3.5 mm.
Logitech’s Tablet Speaker isrectangular-shaped with rounded corners, and about the same length as an iPad 2.If you like, you can even use it to prop up your tablet at an angle of about 20 degrees, so you can read hands-free, IM, tweet, or check your Facebook page while you listen to music. When you’re not using it, the headphone jack cable can be tucked away into the speaker for clutter-free storage. There’s even a travel case included so that you can carry it with you wherever you take your tablet, and it won’t suffer any nicks, dust, or scrapes.
Setup of The Logitech Tablet is very easy and fast. The speaker simply attaches to your tablet computer by way of an adjustable rubberized clip, which ensures a secure attachment with no concern about scratching. Since it just clips onto the tablet, you don’t have to be concerned about finding a flat place to place it on, as you do with a docking station. Conveniently, it can be attached to the top or to either side of your tablet so that you can use it in portrait or landscape mode. Use the included headphone jack and cable to connect the speaker to the tablet, and just start listening.
The full-bodied, stereo sound is delivered by the dual speaker drivers located at each end of the device. The speaker can last up to eight hours on a single charge, which is accomplished via USB.Imagine how your social standing will improve when you can offer several movies or an entire night’s worth of music without worrying about running out of power.Of course, the actual battery life could be affected by such criteria as environmental conditions, the amount of use, and the types of settings applied.
The portable speaker will run you about $50, which some users find to be about right, but others consider a little high. While most users rate the sound quality as good, especially for videos, there are some who would like for it to be a little more “booming” when they play music; they also report some distortion and rattling at the highest volume level. And even though the rechargeable batteries last a long time, they do have a limited number of charge cycles.
The general consensus is that these speakers may be a little deficient in “boom factor” for music, it’s more than adequate for watching videos.
